Although I admit I wasn’t initially thrilled to be looking for a job – as I feel strongly that motherhood is a 24/7 job on its own and those of you who work full time are my heroes – I was pleasantly surprised today when I went to a local bakery to play around in their kitchen for a couple of hours. Not only was the staff friendly, but the position involves lots of my favorite aspect of pastry, which is cake decorating. I did a cake with The Little Mermaid on it and I didn’t get to finish her because I had to pick up Luke from school. I don’t like to leave work partially finished, but I think they liked what I did. Hopefully today’s efforts will result in a job. My generous and devoted mother-in-law offered to watch the kids one of the days I would be working.
When I picked up Luke I said, “Guess what? Today I made a cake with The Little Mermaid on it!”
“Did you bring it home?”
“Well, no, actually I did it at work.”
“Yeah, Mommy is going to be working a little bit.”
He frowned, “I don’t want you to work.”
“I just want you to stay home forever and I want to stay home from school forever, too.”
“What if when I go to work, Grandma picks you up from school and stays with you until Daddy gets home?”
“Ok. I like Grandma.”
Good to know I’m interchangeable with other family members.
